The security environment of Union Territory Chandigarh depends to a large extent on the prevailing conditions in the neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir. The important political / protected persons of the major parties and senior officers are having their base in Chandigarh. The Khalistan movement launched by Sikh militants & J&K militants had vide effect on the environment of Chandigarh. So to safeguard the life of important persons & property,  Crime Branch Operations Cell was started in 1990.

The police officers specially trained in commando duties and well conversant with different terrorist outfits are posted in this cell. The main function of this cell are to keep close watch & surveillance on terrorists residing in Chandigarh & outside Chandigarh. Surprise raids are conducted on suspected hide outs, farmhouses, guest houses, sarais, hotels and on residential places of their sympathizers. Regular search and nakas are put at different places for prevention and detection of terrorist elements in Chandigarh. At present there are 1 Inspectors, 8 NGO’s, 13 HCs and 58 commandos posted in this cell.
